LOCAL HISTORY PROJECT

A view of the Wish-I-Ah Care Center from the air. Wish-I-Ah was built in 1928 as a sanatorium for tuberculosis by Fresno County and was sold to become a private care center for the aged when T.B. virtually disappeared in the 1940's. It is located about 3 miles north of Auberry and one mile north of New Auberry. The San Joaquin River canyon descends to the left background of the picture.

This sign for Wish-I-Ah was hung at the start of Wish-I-Ah Road where it turns off from Powerhouse Road. The road in this picture follows the old route of the S.J.&E. Railroad, which was sold and torn down in 1932. The flaw in the picture is caused from the center of the old power magazine it was copied from.

Wish-I-Ah's original building, today's Lodge building, as it appeared in 1928. Note the S.J.E. R.R. tracks in the bottom left of the picture. The train passed west of the Ad building, between today's Ad building and the Lodge, then turned eastward toward the Indian Mission.
